Do you wonder if Montmartre is a good place to stay in Paris, the answer is a loud and definitive YES!

Montmartre is one of the most visited neighborhoods of Paris and the most beloved as well. But while every Paris visitor is eager to climb the steps to the hilltop and enjoy the breathtaking view over Paris, the district is often overlooked as a hotel location. Wrongfully!

What are the Best Hotels in Montmartre?

Staying in Montmartre unlocks a wholly different Paris experience. Not only are you staying in a beautiful, picturesque neighborhood, but you will also be able to enjoy it away from the crowds.

If you chose Montmartre as your base, you can sneak a peek behind the tourist destination and discover the real neighborhood. Where its inhabitants buy their Baguette at the local boulangerie, do their groceries at the merchants of Rue Lepic, or enjoy their morning café on a terrace in a sleepy and deserted neighborhood.

Reasons to stay in Montmartre

Montmartre feels less like Paris, rather as a village within Paris. And this feeling is right! Until the end of the 19th century, Montmartre was an independent city, and the locals, the Montmartrois, are proud of their heritage. Its history gives this hilltop village of Montmartre a unique flair that you shouldn’t miss.

If you are still hesitant if Montmartre is the appropriate Hotel location for your Paris trip, I got some strong points for you:

  • The direct proximity of many of Paris’ highest-rated sights, for example, the Sacre Coeur and the Moulin Rouge.
  • It’s an adorable neighborhood and perfect if you are visiting Paris for a romantic getaway
  • Easy Metro access to many other Parisian sights. Line 2 and 12 are connecting Montmartre in less than 20 minutes with the Champs Élysée, Arc de Triomphe, the cemetery Père Lachaise, Montparnasse, and the beautiful area of Saint-Germain-de-Prés
  • the chance to experience the most picturesque and idyllic area of Paris without the crowds. Montmartre has some of the cutest streets in Paris that are crowded at peak times.
  • You have a quiet base to return to after an exhausting sightseeing day
  • If you arrive at Gare du Nord (Thalys, Eurostar), you avoid crossing Paris to arrive at your hotel – Montmartre is very close to the train station
  • you are granted wonderful views over Paris and also have one of the best photo spots of the Eiffel Tower at your doorstep

Where to stay in Montmartre?

When traveling to Paris, the question should not be “if” you should stay in Montmartre, but “where”.

Given that there are more than 130 hotels that are using the label “Montmartre”, it can be difficult to find the best hotels in Montmartre. You want to avoid ending up in some shady neighborhood just because the Hotel has “Montmartre” in its name. Picking the wrong hotel location is one of the mistakes you can make when traveling to Paris.

Keep in mind: Montmartre is on a hilltop. If you have difficulty walking or need barrier-free features, Montmartre is not a good choice.

The Best Upscale Hotels in Montmartre

You certainly don’t want to miss out on anything – Paris is an amazing city, but you value your nights’ sleep and comfort in your hotel room as much as your chosen destination. There are plenty of pricey hotels in Paris and often, the location justifies the price, not the comfort. This is certainly not the case for the hotels I’ve listed below – they are the most popular and their guests are over the moon with their accommodation.

Located in a newly renovated (2021) Art-Deco building, this hotel is a gem. It features a rooftop terrace and many rooms are granting you a beautiful view over Paris and the Sacre Coeur. It is technically not in Montmartre, but the district starts just across the street. This hotel is one of the few that includes a Parisian breakfast!

The best Luxury Hotel in Montmarte

Surprisingly, there are no Luxury Hotels in Montmartre. At least none could compete with big brands like the Ritz or the Shangri-La, which is one of the most expensive hotels in Paris. Neither regarding their sophistication, but neither to their price!

But there are a handful of small, beautiful hotels, that are one of a kind and promise a more authentic upper-class Parisian experience than any of the big names could.

The Hôtel Particulier Montmartre is one of them. The private garden and beautiful house are inviting to dream (check it out here). Every room is differently decorated. Some more classic, some more modern, others elegant.

If your travel dates are not available anymore, I suggest you take a look at the Maison Souquet. It got nominated as one of the best hotels in Paris. It is located in a Parisian townhouse, decorated in a Belle Époche theme, and features an outstanding spa and wellness area. You can check their availabilities here.

Methodology:

I took data from Agoda, Booking.com, and independent consumer reviews and combined it with my insider knowledge of the area.
