What is the best month to visit Paris? If you are planning a trip to Paris but are unsure of the best time to go, then this post is for you. Choosing the right month can change everythingโwhether youโre after warm sunshine, fewer crowds, or the cityโs best events.
Paris is magical year-round, but each month brings its own rhythm. Weather, tourist flow, and local events vary, making some months perfect for a peaceful getaway, while others are buzzing with energy.
After living here for almost 20 years, Iโve seen it all. Understanding Paris month-by-month can help you plan more strategicallyโand get the best experience possible.
Iโve broken it down to give you quick, actionable insights about each month: weather patterns, crowd levels, and things to do. From misty winter walks along the Seine to late summer picnics at Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, youโll know exactly what to expect, no matter when you visit.

Your Month-by-Month Guide to Paris
Paris is lovely no matter when you visit, but there are certainly times that are certainly more favorable than others.
And Iโm not here to tell you only the charming storiesโwe all know how fantastic Paris is. Instead, on top of telling you what to expect each month, I want to give you the full picture backed by real data. (I am a data analyst after all).
So I went ahead and pulled average max temperatures from the Met Office (because those chilly 6ยฐC mornings at 5 a.m. arenโt that helpful if you want to know what to pack), rainfall data from Climate-Data.org, and crowd stats from INSEE.
Month | Weather | Temperature | Crowds |

And to make it all more user-friendly, Iโve come up with an emoji system that represents rainfall, sun hours, and crowd levels. Voilร !
Just a quick note: if a month has only a few hours of sunshine, it doesnโt necessarily mean that itโs cloudy the rest of the time. Often, itโs simply because the days are shorter in winter, leaving less time for the sun to shine.

January in Paris is cold and might not be the top choice for many travelers, but it does come with distinct advantages.
As one of the least crowded months, itโs ideal if youโre visiting Paris to explore art and culture. The lines are shorter, the galleries quieter and as itโs indoors, you donโt have to worry about the weather anyway.
Because Iโm not gonna lie, it can be chilly and rainy. Hence itโs wise to have a backup plan for outdoor activities.
But despite the cold, January is still great for strolling through Parisian neighborhoods. The streets are less busy, and even typically crowded spots like the Marais and Montmartre feel more relaxed and charming.
Except if you visit for the food festival Fรชte de la Coquille, this weekend is rather busy in Montmartre.
If you love shopping, January is a prime time to visit, as itโs the start of the winter sales, offering plenty of bargains and discounts.

February in Paris is much like January: cold and possibly rainy with fewer crowds, shorter lines, and quieter streets than in other months. Most of the time at least.
The exception is around February 14th, when Valentineโs Day draws couples to the city, making it a high season for romance. If youโre visiting during this period, be sure to secure reservations well in advance.
If youโre lucky, you might catch the first hints of spring near the end of the month. While itโs not warm yet, the sun gets stronger and on good days, you can comfortably sit by the Seine and enjoy some pleasant hours.

March in Paris is a transitional month, with weather that can be rainy and cold or sunny and mild.
As spring approaches, the city begins to bloom, and parks gradually come to life, especially toward the end of the month. Days grow noticeably longer, and temperatures often become milder, making it an excellent time for sightseeing.
Because the spring crowds havenโt arrived yet, queues are manageable, and galleries remain relatively quiet. But unlike the winter months, itโs not typically freezing, making outdoor activities more enjoyable.
For food enthusiasts, March is idealโSalon de lโAgriculture, Parisโs largest food festival, takes place during this time.
With some luck, you might even catch the seasonโs first cherry blossoms that appear near the end of the month.

Paris in April
April marks the true arrival of spring in Paris, bringing reliably mild temperatures and blooming flowers throughout the city. And honestly, for me, it is one of the best months to visit Paris.
Coffee on a terrace is no longer an exception and both Parisians and tourists flock to street cafรฉs to soak up the warmer weather.
The first half of the month is especially popular for cherry blossom season, drawing visitors to parks and gardens. However, with the Easter holidays, crowds increase as tourists from across Europe arrive.
If you plan to visit Paris in April, itโs essential to book accommodations and tickets for popular attractions well in advance, as they tend to fill up quickly.

Paris in May is a busy month, not only because the weather turns truly lovely with longer days, sunny skies, and mild temperatures.
The month is marked by 3 to 4 public holidays, attracting many French and European tourists for long weekends and getaways.
As a result, Paris is buzzing during these periods, with hotels filling up and popular sights and museums often selling out.
However, the crowds bring a lively, vibrant atmosphere, making the city feel more energetic. Itโs an ideal month for outdoor activities like picnics, Seine cruises, exploring parks and gardens, and visiting of course all the iconic sights.

June marks the start of summer in Paris and is a bustling time in the city. With temperatures around 24ยฐC, long days, and plenty of sunshine, itโs ideal for all sorts of outdoor activities.
Parisians are busy preparing for the end of the school year, with summer vacations on the horizon. June is also filled with festivals that celebrate the arrival of summer, such as the Fรชte de la Musique, where the entire city becomes a stage, with concerts on nearly every corner, adding to the lively atmosphere.
As the month progresses, Paris becomes increasingly crowded, making it crucial to book tickets well in advance.
If you need a break from the crowds, head to one of the lesser-known neighborhoods like Belleville or La Butte aux Cailles for a quieter experience.

July in Paris marks the start of peak tourist season and hence is for many the only and best time to visit Paris. As locals gradually leave for their holidays, the city fills with visitors from all over the world. Expect bustling streets and a vibrant atmosphere.
One of the highlights is Paris Plage, which transforms the Seineโs banks into a humming seaside promenade. And of course, La Fรชte Nationale (Bastille Day), featuring parades and spectacular fireworks over the Eiffel Tower.
While July offers long, sunny days with temperatures around 23-27ยฐC, heatwaves (known as canicule) can push temperatures higher, with warm nights that donโt cool down much.
Booking accommodations with air conditioning is a mustโmany Parisian hotels lack this amenity and it is safe to assume that if itโs not mentioned in the description, there is none.
However, itโs one of the busiest months, so plan ahead: book tickets for major attractions like the Eiffel Tower to avoid missing out โ because the main sights are often booked out in July.

August in Paris is a month that people either love or hate. Some complain that they find many things closed, while others love the calmer, yet busy vacation vibe. I know many that only visit August because for them itโs simply the best month to visit Paris.
And I agree, August is one of my favorite months. I love the relaxed, even joyful vibe that settles over the city.
Parisians are on vacation, so you do have to expect that many shops and restaurants are closeโespecially in quieter neighborhoods. But the tourist hubs and central areas stay lively, and Iโve never struggled to find options there.
But while the streets are calmer, itโs still peak tourist season in Paris. Major sights are crowded and busy and often booked out. So you definitely need to prebook your spot.
Hot days and occasional heatwaves are also quite frequent in August, so make sure your hotel has air conditioning.

The city feels rejuvenated, with a new burst of energy and cultural events. Many museums have started launching their new exhibitions, perfect for those who love catching the latest art shows.
The traffic takes off again, the Metroโs crowded, but from a tourist point of view, Itโs quieter than in August. But as still high season, you have to expect tourist crowds, though more couples than families. Attractions often book out, so planning ahead is key.
The weather is mostly still warm and summery, making it ideal for outdoor activities and lovely evenings on the Parisian terraces. But itโs cooling down rapidly, so best pack a sweater.

In October, fall settles in Paris, bringing a mix of rain, wind, and golden autumn sun. The fall foliage paints the parks in warm hues, making it perfect for strolls through the Parisian Parks and gardens. For example, the Jardin du Luxembourg, or more offbeat, the Jardin Albert Kahn.
Luckily, itโs often still warm enough for sitting outside at cafรฉs, but expect cooler mornings and evenings. A jacket is a must and so is a backup plan for rainy days.
By now, the summer crowds are gone, and the city feels more laid-back. However, itโs not quite low season, as many European visitors drop by for a short weekend getaway.
And frankly, it is a great choice, because October is indeed one of the best month to visit Paris.
If you are an art enthusiast, October is a good time for visiting new museum exhibitions. It is also high season for cultural events, like the wonderful Fรชte des Vendanges in Montmartre.

November in Paris is a calm, transitional period with fewer tourists, making it certainly one of the quieter months.
The city still holds onto some fall foliage and if you are very lucky, you might even have some mild days. But overall, the days are shorter and colder and the sky will be more gray than not.
Mid-November brings a shift though, as Christmas decorations appear in shop windows, and the big tree at Galeries Lafayette goes up, adding a festive touch. By the end of the month, the Christmas Markets are open and itโs officially Christmas Season in Paris.
Itโs a great time for better hotel deals and a slower pace, though frequent rain showers mean itโs ideal to cozy up in museums or cafรฉs.

December in Paris is festive and magical, with illuminations, decorations, and Christmas Markets all over town. So if you love a cheerful Christmas vibe, itโs perfect. But December comes with its quirks though.
While many picture a snowy winter wonderland, itโs ironically the wettest month, with frequent rain. Temperatures hover around 5ยฐC to 7ยฐC, so itโs chilly but not the coldest. Snow is quite rare.
December is high season in Paris. International and French visitors flock to the stores to stock up on presents and enjoy the festive atmosphere of Christmas markets. And then thereโs New Yearโs, drawing crowds eager to celebrate.
December is lively and bustling, especially in the city center and shopping areas. But it is not ideal if you prefer a quieter experience.
